Prof Palmer is an Obstetrician and Maternal Fetal Medicine Sub-Specialist who heads the Maternal Fetal Medicine unit at Monash Medical Centre, Monash Health. She is an NHMRC Fellow and a Professor with expertise in clinical trials and pregnancy research.
Prof Palmer’s clinical and research work is improving outcomes for women and babies impacted by pregnancy complications. Her research focuses on the impact of major pregnancy complications, such as fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia.
As a lead on several clinical trials, including the world first trial of melatonin for fetal neuroprotection in early-onset fetal growth restriction, the PROTECT Me trial, she continues to advance access to clinical trials for pregnant women with national leadership through co-chairing the Interdisciplinary Maternal and Perinatal Australasian Collaborative Trials (IMPACT) network. She also led the implementation of telehealth in pregnancy care during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to explore how digital tool enhancements can improve access and equity in pregnancy care.
Prof Palmer is on the executive committee of the Maternal and Perinatal Australasian Clinical Trials (IMPACT) network, working to improve perinatal clinical trials and implementation of new advances. In Victoria, she is a member of the Consultative Council for Obstetric and Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality (CCOPMM) stillbirth sub-committee, that seek to minimise the risk of stillbirth for Victorian families.
With a passion for improving clinical care for pregnant women and integrating clinical care and research, Prof Palmer is strongly aligned to MCHRI’s vision, Better Equity, Better Care and Better Health. She brings team of Project Managers, Early Career Researchers and PhD Students, which will extend MCHRI’s research collaborations and partnerships.
